Barnett Jackal Crossbow is the best crossbow for beginners. Why? It comes from the world’s most famous crossbow manufacturers, Barnett, so you can be confident about its quality. This crossbow shoots straight, flat, and consistently, making it ideal for target or competition shooters and hunters.
Over and above that, its quad limb assembly which is combined with high energy wheels and a synthetic string and cable system that produce arrow speeds of 315 feet per second. With 150-pound draw weight, you’ll actually be amazed by the accuracy of this one, especially because it comes at a cheap price.

On the other hand, this crossbow also has a negative side. Directions are poor and the illustrations in low standard grayscale are hard to understand. This will require more time for you to avoid misusing the crossbow. Some reviews mentioned that their string broke after only 20 practice shots. The clip that holds the bold down also broke after 30 shots. The bow may lock up from time to time after years of use and you may be unable to get the safety off. The plastic arrow retainer easily breaks as well, but at least they have provided an extra. They probably know that the plastic won’t last long. The crossbow is also heavy, weighing 7.7 pounds.
This crossbow is very easy to assemble. Thanks to the included instructions, in just under 20 minutes, you can get this working. Here are the steps you must follow:
- Attach quiver mount to the stock
- Attach the cocking stirrup to the riser
- Secure the riser to the stock
- Mount the 3-red dot scope
All assembly hardware is found inside the package to allow you to start hunting right away. Bolts, screws, and a set of hex keys are included in the box so you won’t have to worry about providing them for your set-up.
However, no crossbow is perfect. One disadvantage of purchasing this is the lack of a cocking device in this Barnett bow package. This device lessens the cocking tension, thus preventing easily feeling pain or soreness in your hands when cocking. Another complaint associated with the Jackal crossbow is that is does make a relatively loud sound when an arrow is fired. A dampening system can be easily installed to minimize noise, and some models are designed to not add any noticeable weight to the bow.
When it comes to the strings, you might notice string serving separation after shooting around 700 arrows. You will then have to replace the string. But a Barnett Jackal user confirmed that a new one can last after shooting around 800 arrows. You just have to make sure that you’ll wax the string as often as every five shots so you can maximize its use. Both the string and cable on the Jackal are made of synthetic materials as mentioned above.
If you did your research, then you probably know that the package includes 3 Easton arrows, each having 20 inches, with screw-in field points (as opposed to glued-in). Kinetic Energy with the included arrows is 84 ft. lbs. at point blank range. These arrows are very durable and will not bend nor break even after hundreds of impacts from close (20 yards) range. Arrows of 18 inches will work with this crossbow as well but for better accuracy, stick with the 20 inches. Arrow quiver can also be quickly detached from the stock.
The accurate scope is pre-sighted up to 20 yards for your convenience, and if your activities require you to adjust, you may do so. The included quiver ensures that your arrows are always close by. You will also appreciate the included 5-year warranty even if it’s just limited.
If you’re looking for a case, the best case for this one is the Barnett Crossbow Case Model 17083. It’s great for large scopes and quivers. The accessory pocket can also hold bolts with 22 inches. It’s soft-sided and made of reinforced nylon with foam fillers inside. However, the straps and carrying handles are also nylon and this makes them prone to tear loose from the case easily. But with care, this cheap case can work well with you. Just make sure you aren’t reckless. If you want another option, try the Allen Company Case. It’s tough and waterproof. You can fit the Barnett Jackal here and its fitted design takes up less space in your truck bed. The accessory pockets are perfect for your 20” bolts, too.
The customer service is also great. They respond as soon as you can and provide solutions to your concerns.
Overall, this crossbow’s package has everything you need as a beginner. Its lightweight construction helps ensure comfort, and can also prevent arm fatigue that might cause your hands to shake and throw your aim off. The lightweight design also makes this crossbow an excellent choice for children.
